What about ASHI Certification Programs?

ASHI ACLS PALS CPR First Aid certification classes

Is ASHI Certification Accredited?

ASHI stand for the American Safety and Health Institute which is the third largest training accreditation organization in the United States, providing basic life support, first aid, (ACLS) advanced cardiac life support, (PALS) pediatric advanced life support training and certification.

ASHI is and accrediting organization and recognized by many health care organizations and state agencies. ASHI provides theses certification programs and accredits or “certifies” them as credible for the given topic. Other national organizations like the continuing board of emergency medical services, or local agencies like the State of California Board of registered Nurses can look at ASHI’s program content and if they determine it is consistent with industry standards, can formally recognize it as valid.

Many times ASHI training centers are asked if they are approved by the American Heart Association. ASHI is an independent accrediting organization and doesn’t depend on AHA for approval or recognition. So, it is not necessary that ASHI be “accredited” by the American Heart Association Although an “endorsement” by the AHA would be beneficial, it has not yet occurred.

Will my employer or school accept ASHI certification?

It all depends on your organizations policies. Some organizations simply want their staff or students to have accredited, industry standard, training and certification. Still, in other cases, organizations may prefer a specific certification like the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. It is a matter of organizational preference sometimes mixed with a bit of politics.

Is ASHI’s program as good as AHA or American Red Cross?

ASHI’s program content is based on current American Heart Association guidelines and follows AHA standards very closely. Because the AHA is the leader in research for emergency cardiovascular care it is important for ASHI to produce programs that are compliant with AHA guidelines.

If I take an ASHI class and my organization does not accept ASHI certification what should can I do?

It is in every student’s best interest to understand PRIOR to taking a class what their organization requires of its employees. Once you have been trained and certified, the training center providing the service has done their part. It is not the responsibility of a training center to determine what a students organization expects from it employees or students. You can request documentation from the training center to verify program integrity and industry compliance to prove legitimacy. However, some organizations policies are far above managers and supervisors ability to make any changes. It is best to be prepared prior to taking a class by knowing what you need in the first place.

I am not employed but am seeking employment. How do I know what certification employers will accept?

This will vary greatly depending on where you are applying and to what specific organization. It is best to ask them.
