Occupational therapy used for stroke patients can be very beneficial. A person who has suffered a stroke will be 40% less likely to have to live in an assisted care facility if they follow their occupational therapy program as given. Occupational therapy should be started when the patient is ready to handle it. Medical care is the most important focus after a person has had a stroke. The patient must be fully recovered from their stroke and ready to take on the tasks of retraining themselves to walk, dress, and bath themselves again. Occupational therapy for stroke victims is a long-term type of therapy that will help the person rehabilitate.
Stroke victims will normally have a long recovery time and will need help in all aspects of their life. The job of the occupational therapist is to come up with a program that will slowly enable the person to start taking care of themselves again. The people who are around the patient on a daily basis will become an integral part of the persons recovery. Help from friends and family can make the occupational therapy process much easier and a lot faster. It is important to remember that occupational therapy is not the answer for all stroke patients. It is beneficial to most as it helps the person learn to use their body again. Some stroke patients will need therapy for a long time before getting any better.
