Occupational Therapy Assistant


An occupational therapy assistant will work directly with an occupational therapist to develop and implement a rehabilitative program for a person with a mental, emotional, physical or developmental disorder. This program will be designed to improve the quality of life for the client. A client can be a person who was injured at work and needs help overcoming lost motor skills. An individual with a learning disability may need help with skills to enable them to have a higher level of independence. As an occupational therapy assistant a client with the exercises outlined in their treatment plan that has been approved by an occupational therapist.

An occupational therapist assistant will need to have a fair amount of strength in order to lift and help patients who need it. On occupational therapy assistant will need to attend an accredited school that has been approved by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education. While attending school an occupational therapy assistant student can expect to attend classes in healthcare, basic medical terminology, physiology and anatomy. The second year of study will include mental health studies, gerontology, pediatrics, and adult physical disabilities. After graduation, a person must sit for a national certification examination. In order to start working in the field a person must pass this examination along with any other requirements a state may have. Employment in this field is expected to grow at a much faster rate than other jobs. This is because most occupational therapists will be using assistants more to help ease the demand.
