Occupational Therapy Examination Review Guide, Third Edition
Occupational Therapy Internships
As an occupational therapy student a person will have to have several hours of observation completed in order to finish their degree. These hours may be obtained in a variety of ways including volunteering at hospitals, clinics, nursing and retirement homes, or schools. An internship is a great way to gain experience in the field of occupational therapy. Occupational therapy internships are offered throughout hospitals and clinics. There are even opportunities for students to study abroad. A person may choose an internship with a hospital that they are considering working for after graduation.
Internships offer an excellent way to determine if a certain work atmosphere is the right choice for the person. Normally an internship is conducted as the last semester of a degree in occupational therapy. These positions usually require a person to work around 40 hours a week and are most of the time unpaid positions. Finding an internship will take some effort. A person will need to research different positions and areas in which they wish to work. Not all hospitals and clinics offer an internship program so when a person begins their search they must consider several different options. When applying for an internship it will be important to present yourself in the most professional manner. A person may be required to submit a resume and several letters of recommendation in order to obtain an internship with a hospital. It will be important to maintain a good working relationship throughout the internship also as this could lead to being offered a job when your education is completed.
