Preparing for the Occupational Therapy National Board Exam: 45 Days and Counting Reviews
Occupational Therapy Licensing
A person who wishes to become an occupational therapist will need to first acquire the proper education. A bachelor’s degree in a liberal arts program is usually the first step. The bachelor’s program should focus on an occupational therapy track in order to ensure that the proper prerequisite courses are taken to obtain a place in a post-graduate program. To become a licensed occupational therapist a person will need to obtain a masters or doctorate in occupational therapy. After achieving a masters or doctorate in occupational therapy, it will be required by most states to pass a certification exam. The National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy has designed a test that reflects the standards of a competent practice in the field.
The NBCOT is in charge of developing, administering and reviewing the certification process. After successfully passing the national exam, a candidate may also have other tests to take in order to become licensed in the state that they have chosen to practice in. Each state has a different set of standards that must be met in order to obtain licensure. Some states require the completion of their own examination before offering a license to practice. Once a person has become a licensed occupational therapist they will be required to maintain their license throughout their career. A person will be required to renew their license after a certain period of time that is dependent on the state. Continuing education may also be required by a state in order to maintain current licensure.
