Since being a security guard involves having responsibility for providing law and order, it is a given that background checks will be carried out at some stage of entering the profession. However, what is not a given is what exactly a background check involves. If you have any form of criminal history, you may want to know if this stops you from getting in to a security career. You may also be wondering whether security guards are subject to credit checks by their employers, since many employers also look in to potential employees’ credit record as part of their background checks. In most states, security guards need a license in order to become employed. To get a license, a background check is performed.

Security guards can also be subjected to background checks when being hired for a specific job in addition to this. Whether or not employers perform background checks largely depends on the job. Employers will assess whether or not they think it is essential that your criminal background is checked. If you are working in a hospital, it is much more likely that your employer will look in to your background than if you are simply working as a security guard in charge of crowd control at an event. Armed guards are also more likely to receive background checks from their employers than unarmed guards, due to the level of responsibility they have by being armed. Regardless of when you receive a background check, the same types of things will be looked for in your criminal history. Convictions for any serious criminal activities will result in you being disallowed from working as a security guard. Any convictions for violent acts such as assault or rape, or convictions for something such as fraud or arson will come up in your background check. If you have any misdemeanors, these may or may not come up. Employers can choose what they want to look in to, and sometimes they will look for misdemeanors in addition to convictions.

Aside from receiving a background check into your criminal history, it is also commonplace for drugs tests to be carried out on security professionals. Security guards are required to be alert and focused at all times, and anything that can interfere with normal functioning poses a risk to the safety of the guard and to members of the public. Therefore, any traces of any illegal substances found in the drugs tests will most likely result in severe disciplinary action and often the loss of the job. As for credit status, this is not something that is looked in to at least by most security guard employers. If you have poor credit, it is not expected that your job performance will be affected as a result, and therefore most employers see no need to look in to it.

While not all states require a certification to become a security guard, there are some standard requirement. Applicants usually have to be at least eighteen years old and be able to pass a background check, a drug test and take a course in property rights and emergency procedures. Because there are so many different areas in which a security guard can work, any extensive training will most likely vary from job to job. Some security jobs require armed guards, like banks, and will require that the guard is properly trained. Armed guards have to deal with all federal mandates as well as those laid out by the state or individual companies.

Training usually includes surveillance, fire arm safety and how to report crimes. Of course, depending on the job, more in depth training may be required. Retired police officers and private investigators or individuals who have a background in law enforcement are not typically required to re-take the basic training courses to become an armed security guard. There is a huge difference between being an armed guard and a non-armed guard, however, non-armed guards can move up to being armed with the proper training, enabling them to make more money.

If you are thinking about entering a security career, it is essential you know exactly what you will need to do to get there. You need to know what is required of you, what kind of training you must undergo and how much time and money you will need to put into it. Knowing everything beforehand means you can make a fully educated decision about what is best for your future.

There are no official educational requirements you must fulfill to become a security guard. However, many employers do prefer the security professionals they are hiring to at least have graduated high school. Additionally, most states require you have a license to work as a security guard. To get a license, you have to be at least 18 years old, you must undergo a background check for any criminal convictions and you will have to go through a number of training courses about the various important aspects of being a security guard (the courses will range from training you how to detain criminals to giving you training on emergency procedures). How much training you need will depend on which state you are in. Courses you must undergo will be given as a set number of hours – you may have to undergo, for example, 8 hours of the first course to progress to the next one, etc.

Each course will be completed one after the other, and between courses you have a set number of days to get onto the next one, or else what you have completed so far will be voided. If you want to become an armed guard, you have to undergo additional compulsory training in most states. Often you also have to renew your license to be an armed guard regularly (once a year). On top of this, once you have been hired for a job, you may have more compulsory training to go through from the employer before you can start working, depending on the exact nature of the job.

It is possible to do a two year associate’s degree as a security guard or to do a one or two month certificate program, although these are by no means essential. Employers will look upon such additional training kindly and you are more likely to be hired for the better paying jobs that require a higher degree of responsibility. How much you have to pay for your training will depend on what exactly you do. Going for an associate’s degree will cost more since it lasts two years. The cost for getting a license varies between states, although it will not be much more than a few hundred dollars. It will cost you more if you want a license to be an armed guard, since you have to pay for this and the regular guard license too.
