As with all careers in the health field, paramedics must have a quick response. EMT Paramedics are called to emergency scenes to safe people’s lives. Therefore it is essential for them to respond as quickly as possible to emergency situations. Paramedics may have to stop bleeding, handle someone with a broken neck or back, administer medications, and provide life support victims—overall save their life. When it comes to saving lives, making quick logical decisions and acting on the decision as quick as humanly possible is vital. EMT Paramedic careers can be very stressful, and only people with the ability to decision make and problem solve quickly should choose to be a paramedic student.

So what exactly trains great paramedics to act so quickly on their feet and not make mistakes? EMT paramedic schools and paramedic programs both train paramedics for the education that they will need and the ability and qualities they will need to be successful. EMT paramedic schools educate the students on medications that they may have to administer, their side effects, life support methods, and problem solving skills and decision making skills. Paramedic programs are not typically required, but they can better prepare a paramedic student for their career. The programs teach the EMT paramedic students through real life scenarios. This helps a new paramedic develop experience in the field before being hired, or even after being hired. Paramedic programs can also provide one with great tips on how to relax, think, and react quickly and logically.

The most important thing to remember is when you are on the job, you do not just want to make a quick decision and act on it, but it must be the right decision. You will have to quickly weigh your options, and choose what should be done first. A quick response is only good when the correct response is made. An EMT paramedic should always identify the situation first, and then react quickly with the proper care. For example, if someone has a broken neck, and the paramedic does not take time to identify this could be a possibility, then the injured person could be paralyzed or killed. For this reason, logic needs to be applied when making all decisions, but with the thought that time is of the essence. A quick response to the injured person’s needs could determine life or death for him or her.

If you’ve always wanted a career helping others, becoming a paramedic is a great way of getting just that kind of career. But how do you get started for training and how do you get certified? In order to get paramedic training you need to find a school that specializes in that field. There are some schools online and there are some brick and mortar schools you can attend.

It’s not an easy course to take, and it takes 18-24 months to get through the training. The classes are condensed, so you have to keep up with some fast learning. But the courses that you’ll take are very interesting. You’ll probably dive right into the courses.

You have to become an emergency medical technician before you become a paramedic. Some states use different words to identify the job, but basically it’s all the same thing. In California you’d be a EMT(1), whereas in other states you’re an EMT(B).

Whatever it’s called, when you go through paramedic training, you are learning how to help people in extremely life threatening circumstances. EMT-B’s who work on an ambulance are far better prepared for becoming a paramedic.

Look for the training you can get in this field at a hospital, at a community college or at the ambulance service. EMT basics are certified to work on an ambulance.

Some states require different education and training to be a paramedic. You’ll need to look at taking courses in algebra, physiology, anatomy, electrocardiography, and have at least a 10th grade reading ability.

In most states you don’t need to get a degree, but in some states you might be required to get an Associates Degree in order to become a paramedic. When you do intend to enroll in a school to take classes in paramedics, ask other paramedics which schools they recommend. You want to go to a school that will give you the best training. Even though cost can be a subject that you have to consider, cost isn’t as important as getting the best training you can get.

You may have to struggle as a student, but you want to go to a school that makes you work hard so you will be a good quality paramedic and you’ll be prepared for that world out there when you get hired. Good paramedic training is what you’re after, because after all, this will be your career.

If you are interested in a job that really makes a difference in peoples lives, then very few jobs meets this goal better than becoming a paramedic. However, becoming a paramedic takes a fair amount of training and a substantial investment in time. However, paramedic training will not only equip you for this very serious and very important job, but it could usher you in to a career that you have always dreamed of.

As far as paramedic training goes, the time it takes to actually become a paramedic can be as little as 18 months to upwards to a few years. Since this profession is regulated by state governments, the time it will take to reach paramedic status really depends on the individual requirements of the state in which you live.

The first thing you will need to do is train to become an EMT. Becoming an EMT will train you to intervene in life threatening situations. Once you have gotten the training needed to become an EMT which can take as long as 12 weeks of training, you can take the test to become a licensed EMT.

After you have passed your exam and are licensed by the state, you need to look for a job as an EMT. While this is not required for paramedic training, it is recommended as spending at least a year as an EMT, with all it’s on the job training, will better prepare you to become a paramedic in the future.

The next step is to take prep classes specifically for paramedic training. While the length of training you will be required to take will vary from state to state, all states require a certain amount of paramedic training beyond what the individual has already received on the job.

Fortunately, there are many places where you can find this sort of training. From established colleges and universities to community colleges and technical schools. However, take your time in choosing a place to receive your training and make sure that the training they offer meets acceptable standards and make sure that the school has the proper accreditation.

After all of that you will be a licensed paramedic and you can follow after a career that is fulfilling and exciting and one that provides an important service to people in need.

To become a paramedic you have to be intelligent and have the ability to work under pressure. Paramedic training is a very pressure oriented environment from day one. This is because of the nature of the work. A licensed paramedic carries a tremendous responsibility in addition to professional liability that can put their entire career on the line. Training can occur in a private allied health school or community college and varies in price generally from $10,000.00 – $15,000.00.

Before you can begin paramedic training you must first be an EMT basic or intermediate. Many of the skills necessary to become a paramedic are acquired as an EMT. You cannot be a solid and competent paramedic without first mastering the basics. Just as with the development of any skill, you must first learn to walk before you can run. The same runs true for the world of emergency medical services. In addition to completing an EMT course, it is advisable to actually get some experience as an EMT. Nothing takes the place of actual experience.

Many schools will not accept students without some level of basic field experience. Paramedic programs pre-requisites may also require addition anatomy and physiology course prior to enrollment. An emergency medical professional must have an extensive knowledge of the body systems and how they work. You will also need a background check, drug screening and a series of shots prior to doing clinical rotations.

Paramedic training usually consist of three phases.

Didactic

Didactic is the first phase of training and consist of extensive book work, practical skills development as well as examination.

Clinical’s

Clinical’s are where the student begins to apply the skills learned in didactic with real patients in a hospital setting under the guidance of other licensed and experienced professionals

Field Internship

The field internship is where the student will work with a seasoned paramedic to learn the basics of how to actually be a paramedic. This takes place on an ambulance in the real world., with real emergencies.

Course Completion

On the student has successfully completed all portion of the training, including the necessary practical and written exams, they will receive a course completion certificate. This is not a license to practice. In the united states, most students will need to pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam and be certified by the NREMT in ordered to qualify for a license in their state.

Each state has it’s own licensing requirements. However, they all generally accept the NREMT certification as authoritative and recognition of competence. After NREMT certification has been acquired, application to your particular state can be made. Being a paramedic is great ways to acquire clinical skills without years of formal education and is often the starting point for many who will go on to become physicians, nurses and other health care professionals.

Regardless of where a persons goes professionally after becoming a paramedic, the experience of providing emergency care at an advanced level is truly life changing.

EMT basics work in a variety of environments and locations from hospitals ERs and ambulance companies, to fire departments, casinos and sports arenas. The nature of emergency care is very dynamic with unexpected event occurring all the time. Among the numerous types of emergencies are pediatric emergencies. Unintentional emergencies are the leading cause of death in children and for this reason the EMS professional whether advanced or basic should be prepared. Pediatric advanced life support is a course that can be useful in prepare EMT basic for assisting with pediatric emergencies. EMT basics are often found among advanced providers and assist with life saving effort. Without EMT basic, EMS falls apart. The more well trained EMT basic available the better.

EMT Schooling

The PALS course is not recommended for new EMT’s but rather the experienced EMT basic who works with or around advanced providers. New EMT’s would find PALS very difficult and would be expected to be overwhelmed. I would recommend that experienced EMT’s considering taking the PALS course complete an ACLS course first. The ACLS course covers basic ECG interpretation and electrical therapies, something that is necessary to understand prior to taking PALS. In addition the understanding of IV therapies and ACLS pharmacology will also prepare the EMT basic for the PALS course. ACLS can be a challenging course in itself. However, taking a PALS course without understanding the components of advanced life support in the first place will make taking pals kind of like taking a class in a foreign language….one which you don’t really understand.

If the EMT basic wants a better understanding of advanced life support in general, start with getting some experience (which should be defined as working with advanced providers), take the ACLS provider initial course, and then tackle the PALS course. As a EMT basic you will be so much more sharper with your assessments and understanding of critical patients, both adult and pediatric. Even though there is much to ACLS and PALS that an EMT basic cannot do, understanding what is going on will make you much more useful as a part of the health care team as well as help with advancing your career should you decide to become a paramedic or nurse and work in emergency care .
