The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners is the body responsible for evolving an effective system of examinations and implementing it under strict rules in order to establish and maintain uniform high standards in the study, training and practice of chiropractic.
Founded in 1963, the NBCE maintains its headquarters at Greeley, Colorado. It is the chief examining body for the purpose of awarding chiropractors licenses. The stated aim of the NBCE is promotion of the highest levels of competence in chiropractic and enhancement of the professional credibility of the chiropractors by ensuring an impeccable examination system. In the same vein, it also provides expert guidance to licensing agencies of the state in evaluating the applicants ability for licensure and facilitates the licensing process for the incoming members in the profession.
Functions
It should be obvious by now that the main function of the NBCE is evolve and administer a high quality examination system for the chiropractic colleges and provide evaluation and assessment services to the licensing agencies of the state in order that they may grant licenses to the new chiropractors for practice. In its function of developing a standard examination and assessment system for the incoming talent in the profession, the NBCE determines the syllabus of the different levels of chiropractic examination; organizes, supervises the exams, analyzes, scores and reports the results of these exams. The scores granted by it are among the chief criteria on the basis of which state licensing agencies determine whether a particular applicant should be granted license or not.
In its role as an international examining agency, the NBCE performs more or less the same functions for other countries that opt for its assistance. Thus, it develops test plans according to the information provided by the chiropractic institutions of the country, its licensing agencies, subject specialists and practicing chiropractors.
Composition
The NBCE has been incorporated in the state of Texas as a private, non profit organization, operating under by-laws. Its governing councils comprises 11 directors, five of whom are elected by NBCE districts, four are at-large representatives, and two are appointed by the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards. All of them are renowned chiropractors.
The composition of the National Board begins at the state/district level. State conducting NBCE examinations nominate delegates and alternates who, in turn, nominate a district director. In the annual meeting of the NBCE, all state delegates vote to accept or reject these district directors. Then, Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards fills two seats by appointment. Finally, at-large representatives are appointed. The four officers, elected every year, viz. the President, the Vice President, the Treasurer and the Secretary, constitute the NBCE executive committee.
Thus, chiropractors in the U.S., take every care to maintain high standards in view of the large number of new chiropractors aspiring to enter the profession.
