Continuing education has a vital role in medical and healthcare professions. It not only facilitates fast and even spread of new technical advances in the field, but also enables exchange of ideas by providing opportunities for interaction. Chiropractic too acknowledges its importance by making it compulsory for the renewal of chiropractors license.
Validity of Initial License
Exact provisions regarding issuance and renewal of chiropractor’s license differ from state to state. However, normally every state issues a chiropractors license for an initial period of one year, afterward renewable every two years. Thus in Massachusetts, the first renewal of license falls due on the licensee’s first birth day after license issue. However, if the first birthday after license issue falls within three months of the license issue, the first renewal falls due on the next birth day. Renewals thereafter fall due on his birth day every second year. Every renewal requires you to produce certificates showing that you completed the required hours of continuing education in the intervening period.
Provisions
As a general rule, it is necessary for chiropractors to participate in continuing education program every year to keep their license. Missing it may attract substantial penalties including loss of license.
However, the precise requirements of continuing education may differ from state to state. For example, in New Jersey chiropractors are not required to undergo any continuing education at all, while in Oregon they are required to undergo 6 hours of continuing education in the first year and 20 hours afterward. Specific areas for continuing education are also specified, like X-ray and other imaging techniques, pain management, etc.
Modes
Continuing education may be availed through several means. Chiropractic colleges offer on-campus as well as online programs for it. Participation in professional seminars, conferences, workshops, etc., is also accepted as part of continuing education, if they are in relevant fields.
Chiropractic gives a very important place to continuing education and rightly so. It not only enhances professional expertise by facilitating awareness of new techniques of treatment, exchange of ideas and specialty development, but also leads to personal and social development. So, if you are preparing for a chiropractic career, be prepared for a voyage of life long learning. Of course, you will find it difficult to manage your time for it, but in the larger interests of the profession, patients as well as yourself, you will have to do it.
