CNA's: The Backbone of Long Term Care
If there is anyone in long term care you can count on, it would be the certified nursing assistant. CNA’s are often referred to as the “back bone” of long term care. They are known to serve patients with a smile and make them feel more at home in an often unfamiliar environment. Certifed Nursing Assistants are sometimes called nurses aide or home health aides, and work under the supervision of registered nurses.
CNA’s commonly provide personal care to patients in long term care facilities and assisted living facilities by giving shower, and assistance with day to day hygiene. In the health care industry, wherever there is a need for personal care, CNA’s are the ones who perform or assist the basic needs for patients. In-home certified nursing assistants sometimes provide care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
CNA’s are to nurses what EMT’s are to paramedics. Paramedics and the emergency medical services are highly dependent upon EMT’s to fulfill basic tasks in patient care.
In long term care, the entire system is highly dependent upon certified nursing assistants. As with all health care providers, CNA’s are expected to provide the highest quality care with passion and commitment. Often times would be nursing student will seek employment as a certified nursing assistant to gain experience need to excel in health care. Becoming a CNA is one of the fastest ways to get hands on patient care experience and evaluate whether or not health care is a career choice that you want to make.

Certified Nursing Assistants currently are in high demand, especially in elder care, and having a CNA certification will make finding employment in health care relatively simple. CNA schools are not difficult, generally inexpensive and can last anywhere from 4 weeks to several months depending on the type of program you choose and the location of the school you attend. Online certified nursing assistant schools are becoming more available and make the process even more convenient and doable for those with an already busy schedule.
Having nursing assistant certification can open up many doors in health care as well as help position students for a future in health care by providing experience and knowledge in caring for the injured, ill, and those who are simply no longer able to care for themselves.
