CPR for Adults: Why Should I Learn This?

9 March 2012 No Comment

Having the ability to rescue someone if he or she is in distress is an important skill to have. Knowing this skill can mean the difference between life and death for a person. There are many situations that could occur where a person would need medical help. A heart attack and choking on an object are two of the most common reasons a person would need emergency help. CPR classes are offered through various organizations such as the Red Cross and are easy to learn.

When enrolled in a CPR class, a person will learn how to help someone who is choking and how to help someone who cannot breathe. The student gets the chance to practice their skills until they feel comfortable with the procedure and then is tested to make sure he or she understands how to administer CPR. After the class, he or she will get a certificate showing they have passed and are able to perform CPR. The certificate has an expiration date so it is important to renew the certificate before it expires.

Medical emergencies can happen daily and can be sudden. A person can be jogging and experience a heart attack, or a person may start choking on his or her hot dog at a ballgame. Many times a physician is not close by the person experiencing the medical emergency. Every minute counts when a person cannot breathe because the longer a person is without oxygen, the worse his or her chances of survival becomes. If someone certified in rescue breathing is nearby, the victim has a better chance for survival. Some people may be worried that they could be sued if they try to save a victim and the victim does not survive. However, the Good Samaritan law protects these people so a victim’s family cannot take a rescuer to court. The important thing to remember is to tell the victim that you are certified in CPR and ask the victim if you can help him or her. If the victim is unconscious, it is still important to ask the victim, since this questioning is the way you can protect yourself from a lawsuit.
