Cardiac Arrest and The Supernatural

24 October 2011 No Comment

I was lecturing on cardiac arrest the other day when I was asked if I have ever seen a supernatural occurrence during the resuscitation of a patient in cardiac arrest. To date I have not personally seen a patient in full cardiac arrest who was asystolic or “flat line” for a lengthly amount of time resurrected by any means. However, I want to make clear that this is my own experience (limited as it is) and that it does not reflect that of others. I always teach that anything is possible. I simply don’t like the word “impossible”.

The reason being, is that when we apply that word impossible with certainty there usually is someone to come around and prove us wrong. Although I have never personally seen such an occurrence, I have no doubt that there are “many” others who have. There is just too much evidence and too many reports to ignore. In addition, I have seen enough things in my life time that cannot be explained and know that our intelligence and understanding as human beings is very limited.

Faith is the spark needed for human beings to activate or summon supernatural power. Like an engine that does not ignite without a spark, the supernatural “generally” does not occur unless faith is present. Note the word generally… This is why care providers, especially those involved in the management of cardiac arrest patients should always allow a families request to pray regardless of the circumstances or what it may look like. This is currently accepted in most US hospital systems. It is not the prayer in itself that can bring on the supernatural, but if faith is present along with that prayer then there simply isn’t anything that is impossible.

Those familiar with the placebo effect can understand what effect faith in a particular treatment can have on a patient that believes in it. That is a classic example of faith, but it does not stop there, neither is it limited to the placebo study. People that are full of faith can be identified by the confidence they have and the way they approach the problem regardless of the circumstances. This is quite different from hope. Hope is ok and better then no hope, but faith is an entirely different element and is often most unusual to bystanders unless they have it themselves or have experienced it. Faith doesn’t guess or hope, it knows.

I do understand that this may rub some the wrong way. That’s just too bad. There comes a point where our finite intelligence stops; when BLS, ACLS or PALS certification is useless; when your title of MD, RN or EMT make absolutely no difference. If you can accept this reality and keep your eyes open, then I would expect you to have your own experience with the supernatural if you haven’t already. One thing I can say for certain and from experience: Once you have your own experience with the supernatural you are permanently a changed person, and with no choice of your own. This is a good thing.
