The career outlook for Dialysis Technicians is expected to be strong through the year 2012. Job duties include operating dialysis machines in order to treat patients who have had kidney failure. The dialysis machine removes excess fluids from the blood and takes them from the body. There are two kinds of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal, for more extreme cases. Dialysis Techs also record the patients’ predialysis vital signs. They work closely with nephrologists to ensure that patients are receiving optimum care. Other job titles include Biomedical Equipment Technicians, Dialysis Aides or Assistants, Dialysis Support Workers, Dialysis Caregivers, Nephrology Nurses or Reuse Technicians. Dialysis Technicians can command upwards of $30.000 annually, plus health care and other benefits. Those entering this field will find themselves in demand almost anywhere in the country.
A Dialysis Tech’s above average customer service and technical skills are needed in private practice, ambulatory services, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospitals and dialysis clinics, and they can also work in-home with patients. Technicians working in a dialysis clinic could be treating the same patients about three times a week for a number of years. Patients seeking care in hospital dialysis units tend to be newly diagnosed, so it will be important for the technician to focus on patient education in order to work in this setting. More dialysis patients these days are choosing to receive in-home care, and so the demand for in-home Dialysis Techs is increasing. In this instance, technicians need to train patients in using their dialysis equipment themselves. Techs need to be capable of providing compassion and emotional support for the patient as well as their caregivers. There may sometimes be a need to reach patients’ homes in bad weather, and this should also be a consideration.

Travel jobs are available in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and the perks of such assignments include travel allowances and paid housing. There are dialysis jobs located all over the country for those with a sense of adventure who are willing to go the distances. The length of these travel assignments can vary, but it’s not uncommon to spend upwards of ten weeks in any given location. One should have a minimum of two years experience behind them. There are plenty of staffing agencies specializing in the health care field that one might consider signing on with if travel is definitely of interest to them.Those seeking to become Dialysis Technicians may find that their best opportunities lie in larger metropolitan cities. Salaries in these places tend to be higher because of the higher cost of living. Hourly pay may be greater in states such as California and Ohio and a little less in other states. Of course those highly trained technicians with some years of experience will command the best salaries.
