How to Challenge the ACLS Provider Class

19 November 2009 No Comment

Ok, so you have been taking ACLS for sometime now. You been there, done that, and got the T-shirt. Why do you have to sit through the class for 8 hours and listen to this instructor tell you most of what you already know? Well first the question is do you know it? Can you apply an ACLS algorithm to a given scenario without wetting your pants, and do it correctly? If you can then good for you. You shouldn’t have to sit through the class again…and again….and again. If you don’t and you work directly with patients at an advanced level you need the refresher…whether you like it or not.

For those who are well versed in ACLS, understand the purpose of the course and know the algorithms well there is another option… It is called a challenge. A challenge is just the way it sounds. You are “challenged” on your ability to answer the call of duty both on paper and in a scenario. It is not recommended for professionals that have just “had the class before”. It is recommended for professionals that have not only had the class, but have had to actually use ACLS skills as a regular part of their job. This is not something that every ACLS student has had to do. You know who you are. If you are ready, to challenge the ACLS course simply contact the training center where you are considering taking the class and ask them about challenging the course. It generally is not advertised and thus the reason few know about it. Yes, it is accepted by the American Heart Association, and if anyone tells you otherwise they are ignorant of the facts.

The ACLS challenge consist of passing the written exam and performing a demonstration of both BLS skills as well as treating Ventricular fibrillation, Ventricular Tachycardia, Asystole and/or PEA. Most instructors running the test will run you through a mega code where you need to treat all the rhythms. Anyone who has actually used ACLS as a part of their job function knows that this is pretty simple. A challenge generally cost the same as and ACLS refresher course and you will need to have your near expired ACLS certification to qualify for it. challenging ALCS can be a great way to renew your certification and save a great deal of time….and we know time is money. Good luck to you!
