Firefighter Fitness
Fitness is vital for a firefighter. A firefighter will need to be able to lift, drag, and haul items away from the scene of the fire. A firefighter may find that they have to run up several flights of stairs in order to save someone. This will require excellent physical conditioning. It might be easy to let yourself go a bit once the physical examination has been passed. This simply is not acceptable. An overweight and slow firefighter is of no use in a department.
The better shape a firefighter is in the better response they will be able to give. There are many reason physical regimens start lacking when becoming a firefighter and one of them is simply time. If you are working full-time and have a family it may be difficult to keep up a tough physical activity schedule. There are a few exercises that can be done when time is short. These exercises will get your blood flowing and help to keep you in shape until your next hard workout. The first one is a jumping jack/pushup routine.
This involves doing sets of 10 jumping jacks followed by 10 pushups. Repeat this 5 to 10 times, it is a great way to get some adrenaline going and only takes about 5 minutes. You can add to this workout by adding squats in between sets. As a firefighter it will be your responsibility to stay in great physical shape. Finding a few minutes a day to workout will help you maintain the agility you need for your job.
