There is no finite amount of compensation that can be given that will fairly reciprocate a firefighter for the selfless service she/he provides to their community. Being a firefighter means a lot of things to a lot of people; to some it’s the thrill of the job that drives them on, to others it simply a case of wanting to escape the vicious 9am to 5pm routine that a majority of the population seem to have succumbed to these days, to a majority, it’s a way of life. However, no matter what the reason one chooses to become a firefighter, most can rest assured that the motivation is seldom financial.

In other words, “It’s never about the money”. That being stated, even though a firefighter acts upon selfless motives to carry on her/his duties, it does not imply that they should not be compensated for their valuable services, as such one will find that firefighting as a career offers a fairly good amount of incentive in terms of monetary benefit in addition to the obvious moral satisfaction. The average firefighter, fresh out of firefighter academy or training is said earn around $30,000 – $ 50,000. However a firefighter might find that they are eligible for a higher pay grade, depending upon a number of factors. They are as follows:

1. by department: Different departments offer differing amounts of salary for their firefighters, this is not to say that one department is better to work at than another, the fluctuation in salary comes as a result of the size of the department, the city/town that it’s a part of, and the overall requirements imposed on the firefighter. California is considered the highest paying state compensating in the vicinity of roughly $45,000 – $80,000 per annum. North Carolina comes in as the state with the lowest pay, ranging between $29,000 to $41,000 per annum. Most other states/provinces range a median salary between $33,000 – $55,000 per annum.

2. by certification: It’s no secret that firefighters today are more educated than they were ever before, most firefighters one will find, hold at least a Degree/Major, especially in science. This is no coincidence as one will find that a firefighter certified with an Associates’ Degree in Science (AS) or Bachelors’ in the same discipline can stand to earn anywhere around $35,000 – $75,000 (approx.) per annum. All other related qualifications equate to a median salary range around $35,000 – $55,000(approx.) per annum.

3. by specialization: It cannot be stressed enough, that an effective firefighter is one who is educated and knowledgeable in all aspects of firefighting, medical training being one of the most important. As such this reflected in the salary ranges offered in relation to the possession of said specialized knowledge. For instance, a firefighter with even a basic level of training in EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) services will find that the minimum amount of salary they are offered ranges around $35,000 – $53,000(approx.) per annum. Take that qualification to the highest possible level i.e. Advanced Paramedic Level training and the same firefighter maybe offered around $43,000 – $67,000(approx.) per annum.

4. by experience: There is rarely any substitute for experience; no amount of theory will ever compensate for years of practice, due to this undeniable fact, it becomes obvious that higher the experience of the firefighter the more valuable their services become. A veteran firefighter with between 5 to 10 years of service can hope to earn around $36,000 – $57,000(approx.) per annum, higher experience level firefighters may be eligible for pay scales in the range around $41,000 – $77,000(approx.) per annum.

Although monetary benefits should never be a major consideration for a prospective firefighter, one can clearly see that it is another added benefit to one who is considering firefighting as a career path.

The salary ranges aren’t low at all. In fact firefighting is a good career option. But with the amount of work that they do and the responsibilities that they bear, self motivation is needed more than just attractive salary packages.
