Paramedic Firefighter
firefighter is usually the first responder to the scene of an accident. When a firefighter arrives it is their job to make sure that everyone is safe. When arriving on the scene it will be important for a firefighter to know how to properly respond if a person is incoherent or not breathing. Basic CPR is a must for all firefighters. There are some firefighters who may decide that they would like to further their expertise in the medical side of the field and opt to go to paramedic training.
If you are considering a career as a firefighter paramedic training will be necessary. There are courses available at community and state colleges as well as online. Paramedic school is generally 3 semesters that include classroom time and clinical hours at a hospital in the emergency room or an emergency responder service. This training course is intense and will require a person to study many hours outside of the classroom. It is important to be sure that becoming a paramedic firefighter is something you truly want as it requires a high level of commitment. Once graduating the paramedic course the student must take the National Registry EMT examination in order to become certified.
A paramedic will be able to provide more advanced life support. Paramedics know how to administer drugs, read EKGs, and perform endotracheal intubations. The skill level required to become a firefighter/paramedic are higher than that of an EMT and most firefighter paramedics enjoy a higher pay scale for that reason.
