Background checks are a mandatory and essential part of firefighter selections, all firefighters have to go through it and honestly speaking most firefighters would rather do without it, but the fact remains that background checks are necessary to weed out some of the more unscrupulous characters out of firefighting, however, the prospective firefighter needn’t despair about her/his chances most background checks only eliminate you from selections if you possess a very severe criminal record and even then one may find that if you can prove that you have indeed “turned over a new leaf” then it is more than likely that will be placed within the department, provided you meet all other requirements of course. In addition, it might benefit one to know that some prospective firefighter may be eligible for work under laws relating to a Criminal Offender Rehabilitation Act, although one should check her/his local statutes for confirmation on this.
Another piece of relevant information obtained from background checks is the history of the individual as relating to intoxicants or drugs, while having a beer now and then will not disqualify you from becoming a firefighter, most prospects are urged to stay clean and away from drugs, this will not just help you achieve your dream, it is also good life advice!
Credit Checks: Firefighters are considered to be honest and upstanding members of society, as such any black mark in their credit record will be viewed as a sign of dishonesty on your part, which in turn will affect your selections. One thing to keep in mind is that credit checks are not done to see if you’re financially well off, rather they are done to make sure that you are a responsible individual and have tried to always keep your commitments in order. Any non-repayment or forfeiture of debt on your part indicates that you maybe unstable when it comes to financial matters and this in turn translate into irresponsibility in your life. However, do not fret if you have some ongoing debt or if you are not that well off financially, most recruits are similar in situation in that they hold multiple jobs while studying to get by on their own two feet, this shows a kind of dedication and responsibility that will only serve to further positively attest your moral fiber.
In closing, if you have a previous criminal record or even a bad credit standing, it is worthwhile to put yourself through selections, if you can truly show that you are willing to alter your life and change for the better, then chances are that you will be given the chance to do so, in Life, in love and certainly in your ambitions, Never be disheartened by your past! And always take a chance when it comes to these matters.
