As a firefighter your job will be to protect life and property in the event of a fire. A firefighter will also be the first to respond in traffic accidents or explosions. There are several different positions in a fire department. The firefighting team works under a commanding officer. Each firefighter has a specific task to perform when responding to an emergency call. A tiller is the person in charge of guiding the ladders on the fire truck.

A hose operator will make sure that the hose is connected to the fire hydrant properly while a pump operator will make sure the water is flowing through the hose to the blaze. At the scene of a fire a firefighter will be required to use axes to break down walls in order to remove people from the building. When a firefighter is at the station in between calls it is their job to maintain the equipment and make sure that it is all in working order. This includes such things as washing the trucks and keeping the station clean.

As a firefighter you must be able to react quickly to the alarm even if you are asleep when it goes off. Depending on the area you work in there may also be special squads that require more advanced training. A rescue squad will take first aid equipment along with them and help the injured until an ambulance arrives on the scene. On average a firefighter makes around $18 an hour.
