Firefighters: Background and Credit Checks

26 December 2009 One Comment

Firefighting is one of the most sought after career choices for anyone who despises the 9 to 5 regime. However, this does not imply that firefighting is an easy profession to consider or that an individual needs only initiative to become a firefighter. The firefighter is a symbol of a stable community, a cultural icon and more importantly a role model of progressive society, therefore it becomes important that a firefighter meets a certain criteria as an individual before he is allowed to become a firefighter. That is not to say that one that does not fit this criteria will not be considered, one of the most important things to keep in mind regarding firefighter selections is that they are unique to the individual under consideration and therefore some factors may be overlooked if the individual shows a true and honest dedication to serve his fellow human being. That being stated, there are some factors that may affect your selection as a firefighter, they are as follows:

1. A criminal record: one of the most common queries made relating to firefighter selection is regarding whether an individual with a criminal record can become a firefighter. As stated before, this answer would depend on the individual situation of the selection, however in most common cases, an individual who has a criminal record at the level of a minor misdemeanor or one time minor offense will usually not adversely affect your selection, however if your criminal record involves cases that show a blatant disregard and irresponsibility relating to your fellow human’s well being, then chances are more often than not you will be declined as a prospect. However, if you can truly show that you have committed to a better way of life by resolving your negative issues, (psychological therapy, community service, etc being examples), then you may be given due merit for the same. Please keep in mind that background checks on applicants will be thorough and any attempt to lie about a criminal past to unduly obtain a position within the department will only result in a quicker rejection or worse!

2. Credit checks:  As with all factors relating to firefighter selections, credit checks are carried out to ensure that the individual under scrutiny is a responsible and upstanding member of the community; this does not mean that one has to be financially well settled to become a firefighter. Many students are all too familiar with the situation of having to hold down multiple jobs while simultaneously studying to get from one day to the next. Such efforts show signs of hard work and dedication that is sure to be a positive factor in one’s selections, what credit checks look for are signs of an irresponsible or badly led life, such as credit rating loss due to fraud, gambling, drinking, debts arising from an irresponsible lifestyle etc, if one has nothing more than a couple of late payments as a demerit to one’s credit rating, then there is no cause to worry. It is also worthy to note that one maybe allowed to continue in the course of becoming a firefighter if one can properly justify, and rectify any outstanding demerits on one’s credit rating. In closing, always keep in mind that honesty is well appreciated even in case of a shady past and that no problem is beyond rectification in one’s life, take necessary steps to lead a healthy, productive and acceptable lifestyle and one needn’t ever worry about the above mentioned factors.

It seems fair to check credits and criminal records, as this is a job with social responsibility, and undermining values would not show such a responsible attitude.
