The Communication Skills of a Firefighter
Communication skills are important in every career. Everyone has someone that they need to communicate to. Whether it is bosses, coworkers, or customers, some form of communication must be made in every career. In a firefighter career you must communicate with authorities, other emergency personnel, other firefighters, and victims and other people on seen of an emergency. For this reason, communication skills are essentially important. A firefighter’s job is incredibly vital, and if proper communication is not made with everyone, mistakes may be made, which could cause innocent people to become injured or die.
Firefighter requirements attempt to develop their students’ communication skills as much as possible. This can be done through group work and education. Schools must educate their firefighter students on all subjects of communication. A firefighter student should know why communication skills are important, how to communicate effectively, and some challenges they may face when communicating. If a firefighter is well educated on communication skills, it is more likely that he will have better communication skills himself. Firefighters also have the opportunity of testing their communication skills in firefighter programs. Many firefighter programs practice real-life group situations where the firefighter will have to effectively communicate with those around him. This will best prepare the firefighter for what is expected of him on the job, and hopefully his schooling prepared him well for his career.
Firefighters must be able to communicate to others, as well as listen when others are trying to communicate with them. Communicating involves listening, not just stating your views. You must listen to directions from your authority, you must listen to what others are doing and saying around you, and you must listen so you know what is expected from you. If you can effectively listen, and can input your point of view, then you have excellent communication skills. A great firefighter would be able to follow the directions given to them, inform others of any necessary information, and communicate with victims and their family members to let them know the level of danger and what you are going to do to help them. It is always a good idea to let the victims know what you are doing and why you are doing it because it will allow them to feel less anxious and less nervous. And keeping the victims calm during an emergency is essential to being able to save their lives.
