Firefighters Must Show Respect
All careers that involve personally working with people require employees with respect, and a firefighter career is no different. In fact, firefighters are sometimes required to show respect in unusual ways. If a victim does not want to be saved or helped by emergency personnel because of religious or personal beliefs, it is only the victims right to be left alone as long as it is not endangering others. Since the situations can be so unusual, you may have to prepare yourself for these situations as a firefighter student. The best way to prepare is to be open-minded.
Understand that different people are going to believe different things—and even if you feel that it is wrong, you must respect their beliefs. As a firefighter you will have to respect the wishes of a victim and their family. There are some people out in the world who do not want to except help from emergency personnel, and this is something that you must respect as a firefighter. During firefighter school you will also learn you must respect their privacy, confidentiality, and their culture or traditions. If for some reason they want to reject your help, you cannot step over the boundaries to save them. It is also very common for people to refuse life support. Many people believe that when it is their time to go, they should go. Others just do not want to be kept alive by a life support system. Firefighter programs will help you to decide which situations are appropriate to react to and which ones are not.
In addition to a victim’s respect of privacy and life, firefighters also need to respect the people around them. Most firefighter schools will not teach students how to show respect to others, but if you are too disrespectful as a firefighter student, you will be kicked out or expelled from your school. In order to be a student at almost any college, you must have the capability of respecting yourself and others around you. Respect is normally part of Academic Integrity at colleges. Also, depending on the community you get hired by, you may be required to take a firefighter program. If your community wants to have a good reputation, then they will most likely emphasize the respect you must have for other firefighters, as well as any victim or family you are assisting. The last thing a community wants is disrespectful emergency personnel.
