Firefighter Ranks
Communication within a fire department is critical. Fire service jobs will be divided up into different ranking officers. This is to ensure that everyone knows who to listen to when going out on a run. These ranks all have different meanings and are represented in different ways. In the United States of America the color of the firefighter’s hat is usually the evidence of his/her ranks. A white helmet usually denotes chief officers where red helmets denote company officers.
The significance of helmet color will vary within different regions and most of the time the rank of a U.S. officer is denoted by the number or bugles on their uniform. One bugle represents a lieutenant while 5 represent the fire chief. In an average United States fire station there are several common ranks that can be seen. A Firefighter will have no bugles on his uniform. An Engineer or Technical Sergeant will also have no bugles. A Lieutenant will be represented with 1 bugle. A fire captain will have 2 bugles that are traditionally side by side. The Battalion Chief will have 2 bugles side by side or more traditionally they will be crossed. A Division Chief/Deputy/Deputy Asst./Chief/Commissioner will have 3 crossed bugles.
The Assistant Chief/Commissioner has 4 crossed bugles and the Chief/Commissioner has 5 crossed bugles. Some fire departments will use military rank insignia in addition to or instead of the more traditional bugles and other departments have also used ranked insignia shaped like axes. A fire department unit is called a “company” and is led by a lieutenant. A fire captain is equivalent to a sub officer and the lieutenant to a leading firefighter.
