Becoming a Firefighter
Becoming a firefighter is no easy task. There are several steps to take in order to become approved in the field of firefighting. First of all you must be at least 18 years of age to even be considered for training. It is possible to become a firefighter without a college degree, but obtaining a degree in fire science will be preferred. When starting to train there will be a physical test that must be completed. This test will also include a medical examination and a drug screening.
The physical aspect of the test will be difficult; a person must be in top physical condition in order to perform this job. Becoming certified in CPR and other emergency medical procedures will be required. There are times when firefighters are first responders to a scene of an accident where medical attention may be needed. This training becomes vital for those types of situations. Visit your state department website or your local fire department to apply to take the fire-fighting exams. Different states have different steps for firefighter recruitment so it is important to know the process for where you want to work. The final step will be completing the local fire departments training program.
These training programs will last from 4 to 6 months and consist of classroom instruction as well as practical training. The practical training will include fire prevention, fire-fighting techniques, and emergency medical procedures. When the training program is completed successfully you will then enter into a probationary period of employment. This can last from 3 to 6 months and during this time you must prove yourself as a firefighter.
