Firefighter Ranks: Battalion Chief
In order to become a battalion chief it is necessary to work your way up through the ranks. Attending fire academy is the beginning to becoming a firefighter. The next step is to become an engineer. Lieutenant and captain come next and finally battalion chief is obtained. To seek any further promotions a bachelor’s degree in fire science will be required. A battalion chief is actually third in command of a fire station.
The fire chief and the assistant chief the next 2 positions up. As a battalion chief you will be trained as an emergency medical technician. At times this training may be available on the job but most times the person is expected to complete the training on his/her own time. Some battalion chief’s may be required to become paramedics also. Battalion chiefs are required to work a certain set shift. During this time job duties will include commanding firefighters and leading the effort to suppress fires and rescue victims. Part of your responsibilities as a battalion chief will be to counsel your subordinates when in stressful situations and discipline them as needed.
Fire safety inspections of public buildings will also fall into your hands. When at the station maintenance of the grounds and equipment is overseen by the battalion chief. You will also over see fitness programs for yourself and fellow firefighters. At times a battalion chief will need to give speeches to groups about fire safety. It is important to have good communication skills in order to be able to perform these tasks.
