There are many benefits to obtaining higher education while employed in law enforcement.  While currently the majority of states do not require more than a high school diploma or GED to gain entry to a police department, it is speculated that in the future these requirements may change.  For federal law enforcement opportunities, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or police science is a requirement for even the most basic entry-level position, and likely the state level positions will follow suit soon. Once a police department employs you, you may wonder why you should bother going back to school.  The answer is a personal one that only you can make, but there are several important factors to consider before you dismiss the idea. Studies have shown that police officers that have obtained a four-year degree have fewer accidents and assaults in the line of duty, which means simply less people get hurt.


Officers with formal education are also more understanding of minorities and have less civil complaints.  As every sworn officers duty is to protect and serve the communities for which they work, it seems a no brainer that you would want to do whatever you can to better yourself in your position. Many universities now offer online courses that allow someone with difficult schedules to obtain their degree on their own time.  There are also universities that function entirely in an online environment, meaning you can earn and advanced degree without ever stepping foot into a classroom.  Many police departments offer tuition reimbursement and there are many financial aid options available to adults returning to school to continue their education. Outside of a degree program, there are other courses available in many areas that can help fine tune your skills and make you a better officer.  You can check with your department and see what is available to you in your area.  Searching the internet will also uncover some independent programs you can enroll in.

  3. Public speaking courses are highly beneficial to those seeking positions that will put them in front of the community or the media.


  4. Psychology courses that focus on criminal psychology can help you better understand the inner workings of the criminals mind, which plays a crucial role in detective work.


  5. Instructor training is important for anyone wishing to pursue opportunities in the training and educational aspects of law enforcement.


These opportunities may give you an idea of where to start.  Regardless of the path in which you choose, continuing education is an important aspect of both ensuring your success in your career as well as ensuring the safety of the citizens in your community.
