What it Takes to Become a FBI Special Agent

If you are looking for a law enforcement job that is like no other, consider looking at a career in the FBI. The FBI offers a challenging, exciting and rewarding career that nothing else can quite match up to. As a special agent in the FBI it is your responsibility to investigate national security issues and enforce federal laws. There are requirements for becoming a special agent in the FBI; first and foremost you must be a United States citizen. A person must be over 23 years of age, but younger than 37 when they are appointed as an agent. A four-year degree from an accredited school in the United States is also required. There are five different areas of entry programs a person may qualify under in order to become a special agent.

They are accounting, language, law, computer science, and diversified. Entry under the accounting program a person must be a certified CPA or have a bachelor’s degree in accounting along with three years of experience in the field. The language entry program requires a person to be proficient in a language that the FBI is looking for such as Arabic, Japanese, Korean, etc. A person must pass both a listening and written test to qualify.

The law program requires the candidate to have a degree in law from an accredited school. The computer science program must have a degree in a related field and a CCNP or CCIE certification. Any other person may qualify under the diversified program. This program requires a bachelor’s degree in any subject along with three years of work experience. If a person holds an advanced degree they need only two years of work experience along with it. After a person qualifies for one of these programs, they will then be prioritized by which critical skills the FBI is currently recruiting for. The FBI applicant must also meet all physical requirements and a full background investigation. An FBI special agent is a job that will offer new experiences every day. If you are willing to work hard and put forth a lot of effort it can be a very rewarding job experience.
