Background Checks For Medical Assistants

The work of a medical assistant is as sensitive as that of a health professional they help. In United States, almost all professional medical facilities require that medical assistant undergo rigorous background check to provide a better perspective on their social behavior. Due to the nature of these inspections, passing a medical assistant exam doesn’t necessarily mean a valid job opportunity for every candidate. In contrast, it is worth mentioning that every State and community differ in their definition of laws and regulations concerning the rights of a person to assist medical professionals.

The extent to which a person with negative background may perform certain duties is varied among most medical establishments. In fact, a person with negative background may be able to find work in an unlicensed medical establishment but such occurrences are somewhat rare. Interestingly enough, background checks cover a wide range of scenarios which mean that more than one negative result may not fall in serious offender profile to restrict candidates from obtaining good jobs.

These background checks are done by independent bodies that are generally able to provide immediate results. Depending on the screening body, such results may take up to a full week. Each person is responsible for paying the appropriate fee that is not covered by any company or educational institution. Usually the costs are marginal but the overall price may vary depending on the number of reports and their comprehensiveness.

Now days, almost every physician, doctor and health facility require candidates to carry out these background checks. Each business holds the right to refuse an application or end a contract based on the negative profile. Depending on the State, the conviction and probation record of a candidate may or may not show on the record but most major offenses are always reported. The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires the credit agencies not to report an arrest after seven years. Still, it is difficult to determine the exact amount of period that a conviction or negative publicity shows up on the background check but generally such a history is maintained anywhere from five to ten years.

The Equal Opportunity Commission dictates that no one should be denied a job based on the background check, alone. You have the right to contest the result if it is an evaluation carried out by a third party. The procedures to challenge such decisions are similar to that of credit reporting companies. On disputes, the employer has 30 days to investigate the matter and report the results to the affected party within five business days of reaching a final conclusion. Candidates can check their own criminal records by contacting the State Attorney office.
