Medical Assisting Technology

Medical assisting technology gives a complete overview of the different areas of expertise that can be included in the daily responsibilities of a medical assistant. A medical assistant is a multi-tasking professional that is capable of assisting a physicians or other health care specialist in medical settings. The medical assistant fills an administrative role as well as a clinical role in various healthcare settings. Medical assistants are employed by medical publishing companies, research centers, medical and health clinics, medical insurance companies, hospitals and government agencies. They also can play an important role in business, education and community services, as well as industrial medical clinics.

Medical assistants usually attend medical assisting technology schools to focus on one area within the healthcare industry, while getting an education in all areas of the profession. These schools can be online universities, college campus, or vocational schools. The courses normally take anywhere from one or two years to complete, although the online courses can be completed in as little as eight weeks, depending the area of study and the student's schedule. Most of these programs include clinical study and laboratory work as well as administrative courses so the student get a complete picture of the diversity that consists within the title of medical assistant.

Once the student graduates from the technology program and has a CMA certificate they can then pursue a nursing or a Bachelor of Science in Applied Science in Allied Health degree, which enhances their ability to move through the healthcare system in a very rewarding way. These degrees could be completed in two years after an associate degree is received. The opportunities that exist for medical assistants keep expanding as the healthcare system keeps growing. A graduate can find a job as a medical assistant quickly and can usually begin to make anywhere from $10 to $18 per hour depending on the area of expertise and their location. Medical assistants are in demand all over the country.

Medical assisting technology schools supply the fundamentals necessary to secure a good paying medical assistant’s job and to keep it, either as a long term career or as a stepping stone for other opportunities. The fundamentals of the human anatomy and physiology, as well as the medical terminology needed to define and treat different illnesses are part of medical assisting technology. Communication, actual on the job training and diagnostic tests are all part of the medical assisting technology program.

The statistics show that half of the new jobs for medical assistants require that a medical assisting technology program be completed. The chances for promotion are better and medical assistants with a certification earn 30% more money. A solid medical assisting technology education is time and money well spent. The rewards of sticking with the program will be realized almost immediately after receiving a certificate. It always pays to invest in your future.
