Background Checks
In order to join the Army, they will need to do a background check on you to determine if you are eligible. This includes a criminal background check. If you have any charges of possession of illegal drugs, DUI or DWI charges, or an extensive criminal record, you may not be able to join the Army. Every case is reviewed individually and a final decision will be made based on how severe each case is.
The best thing to do is to tell your recruiter ahead of time about any criminal charges you have. You will need to present the court paperwork and what you did to fix the problem, whether you were charged for substance abuse or any other charge. There are waivers you can fill out in order to join the Army under certain circumstances, but it is not guaranteed that you will be accepted. The Army is looking for people with good character and a background check says a lot about a person.
If you have repeated charges of a particular offense or a long history of criminal offenses, there is a high chance you won’t be allowed to join. If you have failed a drug test while in active duty of another branch of the military, they may not let you join either. However, this is determined on a case by case basis. The best way to avoid issues like these is to keep a clean criminal record and to stay away from drugs and excessive use of alcohol.
