Marine Corps Sniper
A Machine Gunner is responsible for handling all the heavy machine guns the Marine Corps uses. A Mortarman provides indirect fire in support of riflemen, using light and medium mortars.Marine Corps Sniper Scouts are members of the Marine Corps Infantry. They are trained to deny the enemy freedom of movement by killing key members of the enemy forces. They try to kill officers, radiomen, and weapons operators with covert fire.
Marine snipers are also trained to provide their battalions excellent reconnaissance and enemy surveillance. The Marine Corps is very proud of their snipers, and they feel they have the best sniper training in the world. Marine Scout Snipers undergo training at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. There they are trained to operate independently of support, ahead of the front lines. The snipers learn at Kaneohe Bay how to use their sniper rifles, mask themselves with camouflage and stalk enemy positions covertly. This is all done over a 10-week training program.
The course is split into three phases. The first phase teaches snipers land orienteering and marksmanship. The second phase teaches snipers stalking techniques and field survival skills, and let’s them have their first fire rehearsals. The last phase teaches communications and surveillance, as well as evaluating a sniper’s overall abilities. The Marine Sniper Scouts are paired with other Marines or other members of the Armed Forces during their training. This ensures that they can integrate well with their units after they finish their sniper school training.
