Marines Special Ops

16 November 2010 2 Comments

The Marine Corps Special Ops is under the control of the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM). Marine Corps Special Ops are specialists at conducting unconventional warfare, intelligence operations and counter-terrorism strikes. The Marine Corps has long had a group of elite soldiers known as Force Recon. However, when SOCOM was formed in 1986, the Marines decided not to attach any Recon members to SOCOM command.

It was felt that to detach an elite force of Marines away from the Corps would disrupt Marine Corps solidarity, However, after the 9/11 attacks, the Marine Corps leadership reevaluated their position. They decided to build a Marine Corps Special Ops team to work under SOCOM. The first Marine Corps Special Ops training course was concluded in 2008. There are now around 2,500 Marines that make up the Marine Special Ops forces. These forces are split up into fourteen-man teams, which are under the command of a Captain. They are based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Selection for Marine Corps Special Ops is highly competitive, and includes a record screening and a psychological and medical examination.

The training is highly rigorous, and lasts seven months. It is broken into four phases. Phase 1 is a physical training program that teaches basic field and survival skills. Phase 2 consists of much more tactical training, including reconnaissance, marksmanship and demolitions. Phase 3 is focused on communications and reconnaissance skills. The last phase, Phase 4, brings all the skills together. It also teaches many skills in irregular warfare, such as guerilla warfare.

Where did you get your information? MARSOC does none of the three mission sets described. Marines in MARSOC do not conduct unconventional warfare, intelligence operations nor counter-terrorism “strikes.” They do low-end Foreign Internal Defense and limited Direct Action (when they are allowed). MARSOC will never be a professional Special Operations force because 1) they do not bring any new capability to the SOCOM community, and 2) they do not allow their Marines to stay in MARSOC long enough to professionalize. They must be re-assigned to fleet Marines to stay qualified and promotable as a Marine.
