What is vocational nursing? Vocational nursing is an important part of the medical profession. Vocational nurse (also called licensed practical nurse LPN) work with injured, sick and disabled patients under the supervision of physicians and registered nurse although they also have some independence. The work of vocational nurses include administration of medications to the patients, preparation and provision of injections, bedside care, massage and alcohol rubs, wound dressing, assist in activities of daily living (ADL), and regular checking of vital signs including blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate, temperature and pain. Vocational nursing is a difficult job. It requires mental as well as physical strength. You should have good endurance and strength to perform effectively as a vocational nurse.

Vocational nurses also need to have a good communication skill as they are the ones who communicate with patient and the family very often. They ask patients regarding how they feel and how their body responds to medication. They give instructions to the patient so they have to make sure that they communicate it in a way that the patient will understand it clearly. Vocational nurses also have to learn how to empathize and sympathize because the patients may feel extreme emotions while in the hospital and these nurses should know how to handle these situations. Vocational nurses work in hospitals, mental health institutions, community health facility, outpatient departments, private homes, long term care facilities, nursing homes and public health departments. Their salary ranges from $30,000 to $40,000. It varies according to years of experience and location or job setting.
