When thinking of nursing career as an option people need to be aware of the erratic timings. They should be able to handle long working hours often in double shifts. Unlike nine to five jobs nurses need to be available around the clock. They may be needed at any time because of emergencies. Their shift timings may extend if a patient takes a turn for the worse or a new emergency comes in. Changing over to a new nurse would waste precious time in explaining any new occurrences and going over charts. Nursing schools and programs often warn the prospective students of intensity and huge responsibility of nurses. There own personal lives need to take a back seat. Their friends and family need to understand and support the absence of nurses from social gatherings or get together. Nurses will often need to sacrifice their weekends and personal lives and most nursing students need to be aware of this before they do decide on nursing as a career.
They should be able to handle the stress as well as lack of rest while being aware of their responsibility to stay alert at all times. Nurses have to work late into the night and leave home at odd hours. They have to stay organized in their personal lives as well since daily living requires a number of domestic chores. Going to the shop even for basics has to be done as soon as the nurse is free during working hours. They should always be presentable and neat since a responsible in control nurse helps soothe nervous and edgy patients. They should be able to make the most of their free time and to appear unflappable at all times. Late night shifts would mean leaving the security of the hospital or clinic at odd hours and the nurse should take adequate security measures to ensure their safe return home. Living as close to the hospital as possible or in the residents unit would help save a lot of time and trouble for the nurse.
A nursing career is difficult and only the most dedicated and hardworking are successful. You cannot plan your evenings out or schedule appointments unless it’s your day off. The hospital atmosphere is stressful and filled with pain and suffering. To be a good nurse you need to have the passion to heal and help those who need it. To offer a cheerful face even if your own personal plans have had to be altered due to an emergency or patient.
