Can an LPN Take The ACLS Course?

Licensed Practical Nurses, (also called LPN’s) though seldom seen in ACLS classes are qualified and should be regular attendees to the course. So why aren’t they? The reason is because most hospitals systems generally use RN’s for departments where ACLS skills are most likely to be needed. Many hospital systems have a a very small percentage of LPN’s on staff as the scope of practice for an LPN is much smaller then an RN. Systems like skilled nursing and dialysis facilities regularly employ LPN’s, however these organizations are not required to have ACLS certified (hospitals are) staff on board and thus the reason why LPN’s are not required to have the certification.
The ACLS course can broaden the understanding of an LPN with respect to emergency care. An ACLS certified LPN is much more likely to respond effectively to emergencies in the facility then LPN’s who are not. Management of acute coronary syndromes, stroke and cardiac arrest are all components of the ACLS course whick can come in very handy when working in a skilled nursing facility or other facility where direct patient care is part of the daily task.
Although many of these non emergency facilities do not have crash carts equipped to respond at full ACLS capacity, a working knowledge of the principles of ACLS can put the LPN in a position to provide better emergency care while awaiting EMS arrival. Effective chest compressions, assisted ventilation, IV access, basic chest pain medications and proper 02 administration are all part of effective ACLS, improving the overall chance of a successful hospital to discharge outcome.
Depending on the region, there are many hospital systems that employ LPN’s in the emergency room. ACLS usually is a requirement in these situations and rightfully so. Not a very smart idea to have LPN staffing the ER’s with little or no ACLS knowledge. LPN’s are skilled professionals just like everyone else who has a professional license. Although they may not have as large a scope of practice, there are many ways they can improve their skills and marketability. Taking the ACLS provider course is one of those ways.
