Pediatric Nurse Training
In order to achieve the status of a pediatric nurse, expect to spend 2-3 years gaining your pediatric nurse training. The usual method of gaining your status as a pediatric nurse is to gain your RN (Registered Nurse) qualification, and then to gain your training as a pediatric nurse by working in pediatric care centers, whether in private or public healthcare. Pediatric nurse training is therefore very much a hands-on job, although employers do prefer it if you have job experience as well as a qualification in pediatric nurse training such as CPN (Certified Pediatric Nurse) status.
Pediatric nurse training usually follows a certain time after you have gained a qualification as an RN, but a quicker method can be to apply for a Licensed Practical Nurse qualification. An LPN qualification is a form of pediatric nurse training that takes less than a year, and is known in many areas as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) qualification. While many countries have general nursing programs built into their nursing schools, it is possible to gain specialized pediatric nurse training by opting for an LPN or LVN first, and getting into courses in colleges associated with your pediatric nurse training program.
A longer, but more usual method of entering a pediatric nurse training program is first to gain your BSN, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. This 4-year degree covers all the aspects of nursing you will be encountering in your first year as a nurse – more specialized modules, such as pediatric nurse training, are added according to your interests and career goals.
