Nursing is a profession that has many specialties including oncology and mental health. The question is what are the pre-requisites for these and what does each specialty specifically does? To become an oncology nurse practitioner, one should have a bachelor’s degree in nursing from a university with accreditation. Having a bachelor’s degree in nursing entitles you to have a basic knowledge about client care, assessment techniques, first aid and medical technology, among others. Upon passing the nursing licensure exam, you can apply for a Master’s degree program in nursing which is typically a 2-year program. This program has many specialties but if you want to specialize in oncology, you should take theory courses related to it in addition to path physiology, epidemiology, acute care, immunology, pharmacology, specific assessments, symptom management, prevention, education and research. This program includes classes, laboratories and even internships.
Oncology nurse practitioners work with pediatric and geriatric patients with different kinds of cancer in different settings including hospitals, clinics, hospices and communities. Aside from direct patient care, oncology nurse practitioners also engage in research and some administrative work. The competencies of oncology nurse practitioners are health promotion and protection, and prevention of disease and treatment. They also help assess and monitor the health status of each patient including the psychosocial aspect, plan and implement treatment, assist radiologist, oncologist, and physicians, educate and provide support for the patient and family. The median salary of oncology nurse practitioners is $60,000. It varies according to location, years of practice, level of training, continuing education and acquisition of certifications. In the coming years, the demand for oncology nurse practitioners is expected to increase because the generation of baby boomers is reaching the age of 50 to 60. At this age, most cancer cases are diagnosed.
