Pediatric Registered Nurse
The USA also has a Nurse Licensure Compact, which is a way of providing pediatric nursing care to the public without extra cost. A pediatric registered nurse can use her nursing license while crossing from state to state inside the US. So far, 24 states have ratified this Compact, which allows for temporary (not permanent) practice of one’s trade in that state. The thing to remember about becoming a pediatric registered nurse is that, while qualifications beyond simple RN status are not necessary, pediatric nursing centers do prefer it if you have nursing credentials in pediatrics.
An RN is not required, by law, to be a CPN (certified pediatric nurse), but many pediatric care clinics and hospitals tend to view this qualification as a valuable addition to a nurse’s training. However, recent studies have shown that the Ph. D. qualification in nursing, also known as a Doctorate in Nursing, adds little skill and value to one’s resume. To get into pediatric nursing, therefore, focus on getting your license via the NCLEX, and then focus on getting into a pediatric ward, or a pediatrician’s clinic, and gaining work experience from there on. One major focus of pediatric nursing, and one of your main duties as a pediatric registered nurse, is to ensure that the family of a sick child gets the help and information they need in order to carry out the task of looking after the patient at home.
Therefore a pediatric registered nurse is expected to liaise with the family regularly, help the family to retain a sense of normalcy, and to include the parents in the healing process. These are not qualifications you can pick up, but are part of your skills as a human being – therefore remember that the most important part of pediatric nursing is to be caring and to be available for your patients.

Nursing is still a hot career. Having a nursing license can give you so many different angles on employment, contract work and teaching. Many new nurses do not realize this and fail to take in the bug picture. Instead they look for that ONE job that is going to pay them $40.00 an hour and often wait frustrated when it doesn’t happen. Experience is where the $$$ are at. Get that experience anyway you can and soon you will have more opportunities then you can handle. Sure you may have to work for lower pay at the start, but as you gain experience knowledge and understand the game the duckets will roll in.
