Is a nursing career right for me?

The nursing profession has been around for well over a hundred years, but people have been helping each other cope with life issues for thousands of years. Nurses touch everyone in some way. The old expression is true: Doctor’s practice medicine, but nurses actually administer it. Nurses provide a service and make a difference and the world is a better place because of their desire to help others. Nursing may not be for everyone, but it does offer exceptional career as well as personal opportunities that are not found in any other industry.Nurses are teachers, managers, researchers and technicians. They discover and implement new technologies as well as care for the sick, elderly and the indigent. Every industry needs the services of a nurse. Individuals have contact with a nurse on numerous occasions during their lifetime. Nurses help people understand the value of health and mental freedom. The nursing profession continues to expand as the healthcare industry improves, so new career opportunities are always available.

Is a nursing career worth it?

Nursing is one of the most respected professions in the world and the demand for qualified nurses increases everyday. A recent Department of Labor report claims that the healthcare industry desperately needs new nurses. This year over 100,000 nursing jobs are vacant due to a lack of nurses in the U.S.,  in 2010 that figures jumps to 150,000 vacant jobs and by 2015 over 350,000 nursing positions will be vacant due to industry expansion, aging baby boomer care and nurse retirements. Hospitals and other healthcare facilities are developing lucrative employment packages, which include excellent insurance and retirement plans, as well as vacation and holiday benefits. A first year LPN can earn $38,000 without overtime and a RN can easily earn over $50,000. Nurses who have a BSN or a MSN earn between $55,000 and $65,000 the first year and a PhD is worth well over $75,000 in some cities. Hospitals offers nurse’s flexible hours and three day work weeks, as well as child care facilities and other perks.

Can I get a good nursing job if I study online?

Classroom study has been the traditional way to earn nursing certification, but some students can’t attend classes at a specific time and place five days a week due to work and family responsibilities. Students need flexibility and want to save money, so online nursing has become a very popular alternative. Students who study online can complete the work at their own pace and can earn the same nursing certification that is awarded for classroom study. Online courses offer the same material as classroom work and online students are offered the same job opportunities as classroom students. Online students save money on tuition and activity fees which is an added incentive. Most students continue their online studies and earn a BSN or a MSN degree and some students complete their PhD studies online.

Can I complete my clinical studies online?

All the required courses to earn a nursing degree can be completed online. Local hospitals host visiting instructors so students can complete clinical procedures. Video demonstrations are available so students can do some of the work at home and hospitals assign mentors to online students when the procedures become more detailed. Instructors are always available through emails, chat rooms and conference calls, so students can ask questions and get advice. Studying nursing online is a practical way to earn nursing certification or an advanced degree in nursing and still honor work and family responsibilities.
