Communication Skills of a Personal Trainer

22 December 2011 No Comment

Personal trainers are required to work one on one with each patient to help them develop an exercise routine that is best suited for them, and personal trainers also must teach each customer how to do a variety of different exercises. In order to listen, teach, and work with a variety of people each day, personal trainers must have some education in communication skills, teaching skills, and interpersonal skills. If you have these skills and a passion for exercise, then you should definitely consider going into the personal trainer career. Also, to communicate effectively as a personal trainer you must have an outgoing personality and feel comfortable talking and exercising in front of groups.

When someone goes to a personal trainer, it is most likely because they do not have the education and motivation to work out on their own, and it is the personal trainer’s job to create the perfect workout for them. In order to create the perfect workout, the personal trainer must listen to her customer’s wants and needs. From this, the personal trainer can develop a routine that will work nicely with her customer’s schedule. In order to do this, a personal trainer must have great communication skills, along with education in the field. Personal trainer schools provide you with the education you need on all types of physical exercise, plus they provide you with tools to improve your communication and teaching skills.

A personal trainer must be able to understand their customer’s needs and interpret their exercises and routines to them in an understandable way. As a personal trainer you must also show them the exercise and teach them how to do it, but understand that it may take time. You will need to have a great amount of patience to be a good personal trainer—be sure that you understand that you may work with people who have never exercised in their lives, so these customers will need step by step instructions and may not understand right away. If you do not have the patience for this, then you may want to consider a personal trainer program on top of your schooling. It may seem like a lot of work, but if you have a passion for exercising and the ability to teach, then you really should not consider a whole new career. Once you develop the patience, you will enjoy your job because you have a passion for exercising and making a difference in people’s lives.
