Why a Personal Trainer Must Show Respect

Everyone wants to be shown respect. When we feel disrespected, it makes us feel bad about ourselves, and it normally will cause tension between the person who feels disrespected and the person who made them feel this way. This is never a relationship you want to have with your customers, so always remember to show them respect. If they have an idea that they would like to try as a workout, let them be creative and try to use constructive criticism. Many times personal trainers are confident (which is good), but this high level of confidence could possibly lead to some arrogance that could be interpreted as disrespect.
Always show everyone around you respect, but especially your clients. Allow them to be creative when creating their workout routine, and always remember: it is what makes them happy because it is theirs. You can do whatever you want with yours. There are other ways you can show respect around the gym, like not hogging equipment and taking turns. If there is a limited amount of equipment available, you or your clients should never occupy for long periods of time. Show some respect to others by alternating and taking turns on limited gym equipment. This can go a long way, showing respect to others will give you nothing but great things back. One, they will respect you and do the same for you. Two, it could get you some new clients as well.
As a personal trainer student you will be warned about respect. Especially in careers where you work one-on-one with the customer, as a personal trainer career is, respect is of up most importance. Without respect, you will not have many happy customers, and you will not be attracting new ones either. If people see you as a fun, active, and knowledgeable personal trainer, they will ask you to train them, or recommend you to their friends looking for a personal trainer. A growing client base is always good, and showing respect to everyone is an excellent way to expand your horizon and customer database. Customers also appreciate it if you respect their wishes or their personality. Some people are embarrassed to work out because they are shy. A personal trainer must respect this and try to keep their client out of the spotlight by staying calm and quiet in the gym and by training during quieter times of the day. Respecting your customer will allow them to enjoy their time with you and get the most out of their workout.
