Physician Assistants with high interpersonal skills will have a good reputation

As a physician assistant you want to have a good reputation and excellent references. This is especially important if pursuing an independent contractor PA career, but it is important no matter what. To be able to have a good reputation as a physician assistant, your interpersonal skills must be extremely high. As a PA, you are constantly working and communicating with others through verbal and written communication. This means that you must be capable of working with a variety of types of people, plus be capable of communicating your detailed thoughts clearly so others are informed. As a PA you also have to be careful and make sure that you are speaking on the same level as the patient. You shouldn’t use technical terms without explaining yourself further. In a PA career you must be able to relate to people of all ages and people on different levels.


As a PA you must be able to work with people despite differences in opinions, and you must be able to respect their opinions as their own. People who are open minded and can accept change have higher interpersonal skills. PA students can practice developing interpersonal skills through interpersonal relations classes and through volunteering or taking on an internship. The more a PA student is exposed to, the more he or she will be able to accept that everyone is different, and he or she will learn how to get along with people in the work place despite personal conflicts. It is about being respectful and professional—which is stressed very much throughout PA programs. A physician assistant will not be well respected throughout the community if he or she is known to not have high interpersonal skills or communication skills.


Since interpersonal skills are so important to the patients, it is also important to the place of hire. If a PA can strongly demonstrate his or her interpersonal skills through education and experience, the likelihood of that PA getting hired is high. PAs can demonstrate their interpersonal skills by including interpersonal and social classes in their PA program, along with being involved in clubs and activities in their PA school. References that will tell employers about your interpersonal skills are also very important when trying to get hired. Therefore, as a PA student you should try your best to always demonstrate the ability to get along with almost anyone, and keep in contact with people that can vouch for your interpersonal skills.
