Physician Assistant Salaries

15 December 2009 No Comment

Salaries of a  physician assistant are extra ordinary and simply unimaginable.  The figures that are reported are stunning. Their income is much more than that of an Engineer or a chartered accountant. Let us have a review on this topic and find out the different salaries for  each level of a physician assistant. NOTE: The figures denoting the earnings of the physician assistants are based on an overall survey and have been calculated on an average basis. The earnings of individual physician assistants may vary.

A survey conducted in United States of America suggested that the income of a PA was in the range of $30,000-$80,000 per year. But this is not the exact estimate of their actual earnings. The earnings vary depending on their skills, experience and geographical location. First let us classify physician assistants based on their experience.

Newly Graduated Physician Assistants

Physician Assistants with Moderate Experience

Part time Physician Assistants

Full time Physician Assistants and
Seasoned Veterans

The earnings of new and fresh graduates are not so mouth watering. They earn only a moderate sum of around $25,000-$35,000 per year. This is affected by a number of factors. Fresh PA’s are not  preferred in any organization though the employment opportunities are high. So the salary paid to a fresh PA is obviously lesser. Other factors include the location of the job and the type of organization you are working in. Private sectors may pay a fresh PA with a higher salary than a public hospital. Also PA jobs in the United States of America offer higher salaries compared to the salaries offered for PA’s in countries like Canada, Alaska, UK, etc. Physician assistants with a degree such as a Respiratory Therapists and with moderate experience the salary is in the range of $35,000-$45,000.

A part time Physician Assistant usually possesses more experience and skill therefore  they’re paid higher salaries than a fresh graduate or a RT with a degree. Their earnings are calculated on an hourly basis rather than a full day like full time PA’s. Their income is around $35,000-$40,000. Keep in mind this salary is determined on the PA working for one  organization.  PT-PA’s who work in more than one organization may earn much more than PA’s working full time.
The salaries of full time physician assistants is in the range of $55,000-$60,000/year and seasoned veterans earn somewhere between $70,000-$80,000/year. The income of a PA is also affected by the nature of their duty. For example  PA’s  with mental health care earn the highest salaries according to a survey. The value is around $90,000/year.
