A Physician Assistant must have patience
A physician assistant must be able to stay calm and have patience with every person that he or she works with, including patients, their families, and coworkers. Showing patience for the people around them shows that the physician assistant has respect for them as people, which is very important. In a PA career showing your patients and their families that you are patient, understanding, and compassionate will make them keep coming back to you. It will develop a sense of trust between you and the patient, allowing the PA to have very loyal customers. This can be especially important for physician assistants that practice in a more private office.
Times when a physician assistant’s patience is tested may include training new employees, assisting a patient with physical therapy, helping or teaching a patient a new routine, talking to family members of the patient, and the physician assistant will also have to have patience for the system. Not everything will go as smoothly as it should, so the PA should be able to stay patient, and if there is a time limit involved, then the PA will have to use problem solving skills to work around the pending issue. Many PA students will practice building up their patience throughout school in interpersonal and intrapersonal psychology classes. The top PA programs require them, along with many other psychology and communications courses.
The average day in a PA career consists of mainly talking to people. A PA will rarely have time alone. The duties of a PA will vary by the career environment, but the main duties include: examining patients, ordering and reading lab tests or x-rays, making the first diagnosis, treating minor injuries, and taking medical histories of patients. As you can imagine, these duties require a great deal of interacting with people. When a physician assistant is working and talking with others, he or she must be patient with them. It is very typical for a PA to be very busy, but he or she must remember to slow down and be patient with his or her clients and coworkers. A one-to-one relationship must be established between the physician assistant and patient, and the only way this relationship can be established is if the physician assistant takes time for the patient and does not seemed rush. If the physician takes time for the patient and develops this relationship, the PA will have much better rating and reviews and be much more successful in his or her career.
