Most physician assistants would probably prefer to seek employment in hospitals and other institutions simply because they are not aware that PAs can be independent contractors. This means that you don’t need to be under an agency that handles your contract as a physician assistant. You will be the one to make negotiations to the institutions in which you prefer to work. Indeed you can be an independent contractor physician assistant but there are certain pros and cons that you have to consider. Being an independent contractor can have its own advantages.

First and foremost, if you are your own independent contractor you have the control over your own contract. This means that you will be the one directly doing negotiations to the institution. The advantage of this is that if you have any concerns regarding your contract you can readily voice it out to the institution. This will prevent any miscommunication between you and the company you plan to work for. Aside from that, you can also point out some of your concerns regarding your contract. Another advantage of being your own independent contractor is that you do not need to pay for an agency. This means that you will have additional income as compared to when you have an agency or mediator between you and the company. In addition to that you will also be the one controlling the time frame of your contract. You can request to the company the time you plan on having the contract. This gives you the flexibility when it comes to the span of time your contract will last.

There are also disadvantages when you prefer to be your own independent contractor. The most difficult of being your own independent contractor is that you will be the one to have to find your own company. This means that you have to exert a lot of effort in terms of finding a company. If you are not lucky enough to immediately find the right company for you, then you will exert time and effort trying to consider different companies where you would want to work. As compared to having an agency where they can do the looking, all you have to do is sit back as you wait for the right company for you. In this case, you do not have to exert too much effort just to find your employer. Being your own independent contractor can have its own pros and cons. In the end, it will be up to you. It depends on how you prefer to look for a job. If you are the type that wants to be hands on when looking for the right company then you can be an independent contractor. If you prefer to just wait, then having an agency is the best choice for you.
