Physician Assistants are required to have high communication skills

A physician assistant is constantly working with others, including patients, their families, fellow coworkers, and the physician that are assisting, for this reason, their communication skills must be extremely high. A physician assistant will always be communicating, normally orally, but written communication in also very important to ensure accuracy of a patient’s records. A physician assistant must always be able to state the current position on the patient and anything that he or she had prescribed or any action he or she had taken on the patient. This could be anything from the weight of the patient to the status of a patient after surgery—it all depends on the medical field the PA is in.


PA students develop communication skills a variety of different ways while studying. PA programs include many English, speech, and communication classes to strengthen the students’ communication skills. PA students must be able to communicate their thoughts and ideas clearly, as well as explain a situation in good detail. Writing and speech classes can help immensely with developing high communication skills in a person. A PA student also must be educated on all medical terms, as well as be able to explain the same condition in lamest terms for when they speak to the patient. It is very important that a PA student is educated in how to explain things medically and how to explain things to a patient, but normally it is a skill that physician assistant improves with experience and time.


Communication skills play such a huge role in a PA career because of the different levels of service that a patient receives. The different levels of health care must be able to have some form of definite communication that allows each of them to know the status of each patient. If medication, surgery, or therapy must be done at a certain time, then the physician assistant must communicate with others who is going to do it and when. Communication is needed to ensure that each patient is being properly taken care of, along with so that the office can fun smoothly and no one falls behind schedule. In order to be a part of a good health care facility, the physician assistant and every other employed professional must be able to communicate with one another and with the patients. For this reason, it is essential that all physician assistants have high communication skills.
