Many physician assistants assume a lot of responsibility and therefore must be a strong leader and a good role model. A physician assistant is someone others in the work place can look up to easily. Fellow coworkers can better relate to a PA and not feel as intimidated by them as a doctor. Therefore, a PA’s role in the workforce is extremely important. Not to mention, in many offices, the physician assistant works without a physician on staff. This means that the physician assistant is sometimes the highest ranked and most experienced physician on hand. The law only requires that the physician is in the office 2 to 3 times a week, and the physician assistant can do the rest. In this case the PA holds a lot of responsibility and in most states can even write a prescription for patients.

Physician assistants do not have to have this type of responsibility though if they do not want it. When being hired the duties and responsibilities of the PA career are clearly listed, and if the PA does not feel comfortable with so much responsibility, the PA should not take that job. Ordinarily, a PA will major in a specific PA career type or field. For example, if a PA wanted to work in pediatrics, then he or she should include pediatric classes in his or her PA program. PA schools emphasize this throughout graduate school, and one of the best ways to help the PA student decide on what field to go into is by pushing them to pursue internships or job shadowing in those different fields.

A PA student should not only consider the pay level when trying to choose which PA career field to enter into, but also the duties and responsibilities he or she will have and his or her interest in that field. Physician assistants work directly with the patient, so they need to decide what type of patients they would work best with. Physician assistants often work in the following medical fields: family care clinics, pediatrics office, hospitals, medical and surgical hospitals, orthopedics office, and much more. The responsibilities range from examining, diagnosing, and treating patients. Regardless of which medical field the PA chooses to go into, leadership skills are always necessary. Physician assistants are looked up to and respected, but only if they accept their responsibilities, respect others, and demonstrate great leadership skills. Strong leadership skills in a PA will help the facility to run smoother as a whole.
