Physician Assistants must show that they have a commitment for helping others
In many health care professions, the profession is expected to have a commitment for helping others. In fact, many Physician Assistants are driven by their commitment for helping people. Almost every physician assistant has a heart for helping people, and this should show in their volunteer experience. Many PA programs will only accept PA students who have shown this commitment for helping people through their activities, volunteer work, or work experience. If an applicant is stand offish and has not been involved in much throughout his or her life, then it is not likely that that applicant will get accepted, even if he or she has a strong academic background. That goes to show that personality matters, and it is extremely important for a PA student to show leadership in helping the community and the people within it.
Just as a PA student will most likely not be accepted in to a PA program without showing a commitment to helping others, a student is actually required to be involved with helping the people within the community while studying in many PA programs. This should be no problem for PA students because it is likely that they are already involved in many activities throughout their community. If the fact that you need to be interact and help your community as a PA student bothers you, then that is okay because you are probably not the type of person any company would hire as a physician assistant. Physician assistants must have the personality to get along with anyone, the heart to help people, and the commitment to the passion.
Why is personality and commitment such a big factor in physician assistants? Because everyday a physician assistant will be assisting and helping others, and it is better that the PA looks at it like a privilege or a humanly duty, not a job. If it is looked at like a job, then the passion is lost, and a physician assistant needs that passion to be able to assist the patients with the best possible care day after day. A physician assistant needs an upbeat personality in every situation with every patient. Only a professional with a passion and commitment to help others can provide the type of care patients need daily. For this reason, a person striving to be a physician assistant much show his or her passion for helping others since the day he or she learned how to walk.
