There is usually a certain amount of coursework that must be undertaken by a student before he or she can take clinical courses in radiology. There are, of course, general education requirements which must be met, beyond studies in radiology and associated fields, in order to obtain a degree. Many of the general education requirements can be met through online universities or through traditional universities offering associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in health care programs. Many of the courses that are necessary to advance education and pursue training as a radiology technician are offered through hospitals, as well as through colleges, universities and vocational technical institutions. Not all radiology technicians will need to complete the same programs.


The educational requirements will vary depending on the radiologists intended career goals. As previously stated, the only coursework that may be completed online are the general education courses needed. Education pertaining to radiology must be done through a traditional university or hospital. One should also be aware of the difference between radiological technologists and radiology technicians. While a radiology technician may be able to obtain certification in two years, due to the limited scope of the coursework required, a radiological technologist will have to undergo more in-depth studies.

Most basic science studies can be completed online along with the general studies requirements. However, as mentioned above, technical training cannot be undergone in this manner. This makes clinical or hospital training, either through entry-level work or internship, necessary. In most cases, a student of an online university is able to meet, through online study, the prerequisite requirements necessary to qualify for a clinical program. The essential prerequisites that a radiology technician student will need to meet to advance are completion of courses in computer training, chemistry, biology, physics, geometry, algebra, health occupations/medical professions education and emergency medical technology.


One must acquire either a two-year associate’s degree in the field of radiological technology or, else, complete a formal training course in an approved hospital to become a radiological technician. Anyone looking to pursue a career in the highly competitive field of radiological technology should seek out a hospital or school that has a strong reputation and is highly regarded. A student can contact the American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT) or the American Society of Radiological Technologists (ASRT) to get information about what schools and programs are most reputable and suitable for advancement in a long-term career in radiology.

As the population grows and people live longer, there is an ever-increasing demand for professional radiologists. The rapid development of new and better radiological technology in recent years has contributed for the growing demand for radiology technicians. Because of the demand, more and more people are seeking careers in the field of radiology, and the field of radiology will only become more competitive with time. As more and more private physicians begin to utilize radiology in their private practices, there will be an even greater call for certified radiologists.


This trend toward private radiology has been spurred by the push to find less invasive diagnostic methods. There is currently a great shortage in the number of available radiology technicians in hospitals, nursing homes and other areas. However, these jobs will be quickly filled by the many seeking careers in radiology. This increase in competition for jobs in radiology make it essential that any student seek out a reputable school that is highly regarded in the medical community to improve their chances of finding good work after graduations.
