Radiology allows the doctor to get a clear image of internal structures or minute physical characteristics of a patient so that they can be properly diagnosed. Any radiology technician must also have a high degree of organizational skill, since concise and accurate notes must be kept on each patient and procedure performed. A radiologist must also be able to adhere to a rigid set of safety guidelines. Since radiologists work with dangerous radiation, they must be able to exercise a great amount of care in their work, so as to limit the amount of exposure of themselves and their patients.

As diagnostic technology advances, radiologists will continue to find that there is a higher demand for their services within the medical community. The responsibilities of the radiologist are varied and vital to the operations of other medical professionals. It is the task of the radiologist to prepare the patient for the diagnostic procedure. The radiology technician must take care to ensure that the patient is not wearing any clothing or jewelry which might in some way interfere with the scan. If contrast dye is needed to facilitate the imaging, then it is the duty of the radiologist to administer it, either orally or by injecting it into the patient’s veins. The radiologist must then shield the area of the patient that is to be scanned with a protective led covering. Then the technician must vary precisely position the patient to expose the proper area for imaging.
Radiologists enjoy a great number of career options. Many radiologist undertake special training to specialize in certain types of diagnostic testing, such as performing mammograms to check for the presence of abnormal cell growth in breast tissue. Others may specialize in computerized tomography scans, magnetic resonance imaging or ultrasound. While most radiologists find work in hospitals, there is also a call for skilled radiology technicians in private practice.
